There is a wide range of opportunities for learning and study here at the Willows & Wetlands Visitor Centre. The Conference room is a flexible space available for rent for a day, a morning/afternoon or by the hour. This spacious, warm and light room has free wifi and can easily accommodate a class of 30+ people.
The Outdoor Classroom is set within 3 hectares of mixed broadleaf woodland overlooking Haymoor, Curry Moor SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). It has been created as part of our Higher Level Stewardship and Educational Access agreement supported by Natural England. The object of Environmental Access is “to help schools, colleges and the general public learn about farming, environmental conservation, and food production and, in the case of school visits, curriculum studies”. The Outdoor Classroom is available free of charge to groups of 6 or more people who are learning about farming, nature and environmental conservation and food production. Facilities include: Seating and tables for approx 50, coat hooks, First Aid box, white board, bird hide, parking for coach or cars, water, eco-loo.
The visit will include (FREE of charge) a talk by the land manager/farmer with a bias to your chosen pre-arranged topic. E.g. the water management system of the Somerset Levels. As the facility is set within a mixed farm we are in a position to customise any visit to a number of curriculum areas.
We are still offering our guided tours (charged) of the willow processing yard and basket-making workshop as we have done for many years. By combining the guided tour and outdoor classroom we are now able to offer a very comprehensive experience of the Somerset Levels. NB you are under no obligation to take a charged tour as well. The only requirements from educational groups wanting a free visit are that a tutor/leader from the group must undertake a pre-visit and fill out a form after the visit. We are then able to claim a fee from Natural England. A Teachers Pack is available upon request. This contains information about the Somerset Levels and Willow industry which teachers will find useful plus all you need to know if you are planning a visit.
Tucked away in the trees is a designated Forest School area, complete with fire pit and round house. This is proving very successful and is in regular use by local pre-schools. The children clearly love the freedom and variety that Forest School brings them.
If you want to bring a group here for a visit please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 01823 490249 and we will endeavour to help you get the most from your visit.
